Lesson 11: How do you explain technical issues to non-technical people? 1. How do you explain a technical problem to a non-technical manager? I try to avoid jargon and focus on what the problem actually means for the business. For example, instead of saying the database is locked, I'd say orders are temporarily delayed. That usually helps them understand the impact without needing technical details. 2. Can you give an example of doing this? Once our system was running slowly because of a database issue. I told my manager that customers might notice a few extra seconds of loading time. I also gave a rough estimate of when we expected it to be fixed. 3. How do you handle it when a manager wants a fix immediately? I explain what's realistic and what the tradeoffs would be if we rushed it. Sometimes a quick fix now means more problems later, and I make that clear. Most managers appreciate honesty over a false promise. 4. Do you use any tools or visuals to explain technical topics? Yes, I often use simple diagrams instead of long explanations. A basic flowchart can make a complex process much easier to follow. I've found that people remember visuals better than technical descriptions. 5. Why do you think this skill is important? Because most decisions in a company aren't made by engineers alone. If I can't explain a problem clearly, it's harder to get the support I need. Good communication often matters as much as good code.
